No. Albania does not require a rabies titer test for your pet to enter. You will need one only if you plan to re-enter the EU or UK afterward, and that test has to be arranged before you leave the EU.
A rabies titer test (also called a rabies antibody test or FAVN test) measures the level of rabies antibodies in your pet's blood to confirm the vaccine is working. Some countries require it before entry. Albania is not one of them, which makes arriving with a pet refreshingly simple. The catch is on the way back out, so it is worth understanding both sides before you travel.
Entering Albania: no titer test needed
To bring a dog or cat into Albania, you need three core things: an ISO-standard 15-digit microchip, a valid rabies vaccination given at least 21 days before travel, and an official veterinary health certificate endorsed by your government authority. A titer test is not part of that list. There is also no quarantine.
- Microchip first, then the rabies vaccination (the order matters).
- Rabies vaccine valid and given 21+ days before you travel.
- An endorsed, in-date health certificate (issued within 10 days of travel).
Returning to the EU or UK: titer test required, in advance
This is the part that catches people out. The EU classifies Albania as a "non-listed" country, meaning a higher-risk rabies status. If you ever want to bring your pet back into an EU country (Greece, Italy, Germany, and so on) or the UK, you must have a valid rabies titer test, and the timing is strict:
- The blood sample must be taken at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination.
- It must be processed by an EU-approved laboratory.
- You then wait three months from the date of the successful blood draw before re-entering the EU (this waiting period can be served while you are already in Albania).
- Crucially, it cannot be done in Albania for EU re-entry purposes. Arrange it before you leave the EU.
How long does a titer test last?
Once your pet has a valid titer result on record and you keep the rabies vaccinations current with no lapse, you generally do not need to repeat the test for the life of the pet. Let a vaccination expire, though, and you may have to start the process again, so keep that booklet up to date.
Frequently asked
Is a titer test the same as the rabies vaccine?
No. The vaccine protects your pet; the titer test is a separate blood test that proves the vaccine produced enough antibodies. You need the vaccine for Albania, but not the titer test to enter.
Can I get the titer test done at a vet in Albania?
Albanian vets can draw blood, but for official EU re-entry the test must be arranged through an EU-approved lab and is best organized before you leave the EU. Do not rely on doing it in Albania for EU purposes.
Do I need a titer test to travel from the US to Albania?
No. US travelers need the microchip, rabies vaccination, and a USDA-endorsed health certificate. The titer test only becomes relevant if you later plan to enter the EU or UK.
